🌟 What Is Pre-Team Gymnastics? (San Diego Families Guide)

At GRIT Gymnastics Club in San Diego, our Pre-Team program is designed for young gymnasts (typically ages 5–8) who are ready to take their skills — and their love for gymnastics — to the next level!

Pre-Team is the bridge between recreational gymnastics and our competitive team. It’s perfect for the kids who always want to learn one more skill, who stay after class practicing their cartwheels, and who can’t stop talking about gymnastics at home.

🤸‍♀️ What Makes GRIT’s Pre-Team Special

At GRIT Gymnastics, our Pre-Team athletes work hard and have a blast. Each class is designed to be developmentally appropriate — meaning our expectations, drills, and conditioning are perfectly suited for their age and growth.

We focus on:

Strong basics and proper technique on all four events

Fun and challenging conditioning to build strength and confidence

Team connection, because every gymnast is assigned a buddy from our competitive team who cheers them on and helps them learn what team spirit is all about!

Goal-setting and progress tracking, so each child can see how far they’ve come

While Pre-Team gymnasts learn discipline and hard work, we never lose sight of what matters most — helping kids fall even more in love with gymnastics.

🎯 Who Is Pre-Team For?

Our Pre-Team is for gymnasts who:

Always want to learn more

Show focus, motivation, and great listening in class

Love being challenged

Are excited about someday joining our competitive team

If that sounds like your child, we’d love to meet them! Kids can be evaluated for Pre-Team by one of our experienced coaches to make sure they’re ready for this next step.

🌼 Spring Pre-Team Showcase

Each spring, our Pre-Team athletes shine at the Pre-Team Showcase, performing routines and skills they’ve been working hard on all year. It’s one of our favorite GRIT traditions — a celebration of effort, progress, and joy in the gym!

After the showcase, Pre-Team athletes are invited to join our competitive gymnastics team the following year.

💪 Ready to Learn More?

If your child dreams of being on team, Pre-Team is the perfect place to start.

Open gym is one of the most powerful tools for progress—when you use it with intention. It’s not about doing the biggest skill you can think of; it’s about smart reps, confidence-building, and reinforcing what your coaches are already teaching you. Here are **five high‑impact things** to focus on during your open gym time so you leave feeling stronger, more confident, and more prepared for class or competition. 1. Conditioning Conditioning might not be flashy, but it’s the foundation of everything. Open gym is a great time to quietly stack strength without the pressure of learning something new. Focus on: * Core work (hollow holds, leg lifts, planks) * Shape holds (tight body, arch, hollow) * Event‑specific conditioning (cast strength, leg power for tumbling, shoulder stability) Even **10–15 minutes** of focused conditioning adds up fast—and stronger athletes learn skills more easily and safely. 2. Skills You Need Repetitions On If a skill feels inconsistent, awkward, or just hasn’t clicked yet, open gym is the perfect place to get extra reps. This is especially important if: * You’re a little nervous about the skill * You need more matting * You want to work on it at a lower height or with a safer setup Repetition builds confidence. Confidence builds consistency. Use open gym to meet the skill where *you* are—not where you feel rushed to be. 3. Drills Your Coach Gave You (that can be safely worked without a spot) Your coach gives you drills for a reason—and open gym is prime time to reinforce them. Stick to: * Drills you’ve already done in class or team practice * Safe progressions you understand * Shapes, swings, and entry drills that directly support your skills 4. Basics, Basics, Basics (With Amazing Form) Basics don’t go away when you level up—they become even more important. Use open gym to polish: * Handstands (flat back, tight core, straight arms) * Cartwheels, round‑offs, and walkovers * Jumps, levers, casts, and body positions Challenge yourself to make every basic look *competition‑ready*. Clean basics are often the difference between hitting and missing harder skills later on. 5. Intentional Warm‑Ups and Cool‑Downs Open gym doesn’t mean skipping the basics of body care. Start with: * A thorough warm‑up * Light cardio * Dynamic stretching End with: * Stretching tight areas * Light recovery work * A quick mental check‑in: What felt better today? Taking care of your body helps you train longer, healthier, and happier. Final Thought Open gym isn’t about doing *more*—it’s about doing **better**. When you use your time to condition, repeat skills intentionally, reinforce drills, and perfect basics, progress happens naturally. Train smart. Trust the process. And remember: every great skill is built on hundreds of thoughtful reps. Happy training!

For many gym families, there comes a moment when recreational gymnastics starts to feel like more. Your child is asking for extra practice, talking about skills at home, or watching the team kids with wide eyes. If you’re wondering what the path from recreational classes to team gymnastics looks like at GRIT Gymnastics, you’re not alone—and we’re here to guide you through it. Step One: Interest Comes First The journey to team often begins with interest, not pressure. If your child is curious about pre-team or team gymnastics, the very first step is simple: 👉 Tell their coach. Our coaches are happy to watch more closely, give feedback, and help you understand whether your child is ready—or what they might need to work toward next. If possible, we also recommend attending class twice per week while your child is showing interest. This helps build strength, consistency, and confidence, and it gives coaches a better picture of readiness. Pre-Team or Advanced Class at GRIT: The First Big Step Pre-Team invites at GRIT happen year-round. There is no single “tryout day” for pre-team. When a child shows the right combination of focus, coachability, strength, and enthusiasm, they may be invited at any point during the year. Pre-Team starts at 2 days per week Focus is on strong basics, shapes, strength, flexibility, and learning how to train Designed to prepare gymnasts physically and mentally for team expectations Pre-Team is often where kids learn whether they truly enjoy a more structured, goal-oriented environment. Team Programs at GRIT: When Do Invites Happen? Invites for our XCEL and Developmental (DP) Team Programs are typically sent out in May, with new team groups beginning in June. Team gymnasts train: 3 days per week In structured, level-based groups With a strong emphasis on commitment, consistency, and progression We offer beginner competitive levels including: Levels 2 & 3 (Developmental Program) XCEL Bronze & Silver Gymnasts range from age 5 through the teenage years and are grouped by both age and level, so kids are training with peers in similar stages. XCEL vs. Developmental Program (DP): What’s the Difference? Both programs are competitive and rewarding—just with different structures. Developmental Program (DP) Traditional USA Gymnastics track Standardized routines and skill requirements Ideal for gymnasts who enjoy a highly structured, progression-based system XCEL Program More flexible routine composition Focuses on strong basics with customizable routines Great option for athletes seeking balance with school, other activities, or a later start to competition Our staff helps place gymnasts in the program that best fits their goals, personality, and readiness—not a one-size-fits-all approach. A Supportive Path, Not a Race At GRIT, moving from recreational to team is not about rushing or comparing. It’s about: Building confidence Developing strong fundamentals Making sure your child loves the process Whether your child joins pre-team this year, works toward a future team invite, or simply enjoys extra classes along the way, we’re committed to supporting each gymnast’s individual journey. If you think team might be in your child’s future, start the conversation with their coach—we’re always happy to help you take the next step.

If you’re a parent of a preschooler in San Diego, you’ve probably wondered: What activities truly support my child’s development? How can I help them build confidence, coordination, and focus—while still having fun? At Grit Gymnastics, our preschool gymnastics program intentionally supports physical development, confidence, and sensory integration in a safe, encouraging environment designed for young children. What Happens in a Preschool Gymnastics Class? Preschool gymnastics is about whole-child development through movement, not competition or pressure. In a typical preschool class at Grit Gymnastics in San Diego, your child will: 🏃‍♀️ Build Gross Motor Skills Preschoolers climb, jump, roll, balance, and swing—developing: Strength Coordination Balance Body awareness These movement skills support everything from playground confidence to classroom posture. 🤸 Learn Basic Gymnastics Skills Through Play Children are introduced to beginner skills such as: Forward rolls Balancing on beams Hanging and swinging on bars Jumping and landing safely Obstacle courses All skills are taught through games, imagination, and exploration, keeping kids engaged and motivated. 🧠 Support Sensory Integration & Body Awareness One of the most important (and often overlooked) benefits of preschool gymnastics is sensory integration—the way the brain processes and organizes sensory input. In class, children receive rich sensory input through: Vestibular input (swinging, spinning, rolling) Proprioceptive input (pushing, pulling, climbing, weight-bearing) Tactile input (mats, soft blocks, varied textures) These experiences help children: Improve focus and regulation Understand where their body is in space Build tolerance for movement and touch Feel calmer and more organized in their bodies For many children, gymnastics provides the type of movement their nervous system needs to thrive. 🎨 Practice Listening, Transitions & Following Directions Each class includes structured routines and station rotations that help preschoolers: Follow simple instructions Transition between activities Take turns and wait patiently Participate in a group This structure supports preschool and kindergarten readiness while still allowing for creativity and play. 💛 Build Confidence & Emotional Resilience Preschoolers learn to: Try new skills at their own pace Take safe risks Handle small challenges Celebrate effort, not perfection Over time, children begin to trust their bodies and feel proud of what they can do—inside and outside the gym. Why Parents Love Preschool Gymnastics at Grit Gymnastics Families across San Diego choose Grit Gymnastics because our preschool program supports both physical development and sensory needs. ✔ A Positive, Encouraging Environment Our coaches are experienced in working with young children and understand how movement impacts behavior, confidence, and regulation. ✔ Developmentally Appropriate & Sensory-Rich Classes We intentionally design classes that provide: Structured routines Sensory input through movement Opportunities for independence and success This makes our program especially supportive for: Highly active children Sensory seekers Kids building confidence or focus Children new to group settings ✔ Safe, Clean, Purpose-Built Facility Our San Diego gymnastics facility is designed specifically for children, with preschool-friendly equipment and clear routines that help kids feel secure. ✔ Benefits That Carry Into Everyday Life Parents often report improvements in: Attention and listening Emotional regulation Confidence and independence Coordination and body control Is Preschool Gymnastics Right for My Child? The holidays are a busy, exciting time—travel, celebrations, school breaks, and lots of schedule changes. But for gymnasts, even a short break from training can make strength and flexibility feel a little rusty. The good news? With a few easy at-home conditioning habits, your gymnast can maintain strength, confidence, and body awareness all winter long. At Grit Gymnastics in Kearny Mesa, San Diego, we love helping athletes stay strong year-round. Here are some simple, coach-approved ways your gymnast can keep moving over the holidays—no equipment required! 1. Quick Core Circuits (5 minutes!) Core strength is the foundation of every gymnastics skill, from handstands to giants. Try this easy holiday-friendly circuit: 20-second hollow hold 20-second arch hold 10 tuck-ups 10 V-ups 15-second plank Repeat 2–3 times if your gymnast is feeling motivated! These exercises keep shapes sharp and help gymnasts return to practice feeling ready rather than rusty. 2. Leg Strength Builders You Can Do Anywhere Whether you’re home, traveling, or visiting family, legs can always stay strong: 20 squats 10 jump squats 20 lunges (10 each leg) 10–20 calf raises 10 single-leg balances (eyes closed for a challenge!) Power + stability = safer landings and better performance on beam, vault, and floor. 3. Handstand Practice on the Wall Handstands are one of the best full-body conditioning tools in gymnastics. A few ideas: Wall handstands (only feet touch the wall, facing the wall--we call this a long handstand in class!) 10–20 second wall handstand hold Shoulder taps against the wall Handstand shaping push-ups Even just 1 minute a day can make a huge difference when classes start back up. 4. Flexibility Work the Family Can Join In Flexibility is often the first thing to disappear during breaks—but it’s also one of the easiest things to maintain. Try: Pancake sit with a 10–20 second reach Splits (right, left, middle) 🤸‍♀️ Bridge practice Gentle shoulder stretches Pike with feet pointed and flexed Stretching right before bed is a great holiday routine that helps with calm, sleep, AND gymnastics mobility. 5. Turn Family Time Into “Strength Time” Holidays bring more time at home—and that makes it easier to get the whole family involved! Try: A mini strength competition (who can hold a plank longest?) Family yoga time “Movement breaks” during movies Obstacle courses in the living room When conditioning feels fun, gymnasts stay motivated and confident. Join Us in December: Strength for Gymnasts & Families Clinic! This month, we’re offering a special training opportunity for athletes and their families right here at Grit Gymnastics in Kearny Mesa, San Diego. ✨ Strength for Gymnasts & Families Clinic 📅 Saturdays in December ⏰ 2:15–3:00pm 💲 $40 per family 📍 Grit Gymnastics – Kearny Mesa, San Diego This clinic is designed to help parents learn exactly how to support their gymnast at home with safe, effective strength work that directly benefits skill development—no experience needed!
