The holidays are a busy, exciting time—travel, celebrations, school breaks, and lots of schedule changes. But for gymnasts, even a short break from training can make strength and flexibility feel a little rusty. The good news? With a few easy at-home conditioning habits, your gymnast can maintain strength, confidence, and body awareness all winter long. At Grit Gymnastics in Kearny Mesa, San Diego, we love helping athletes stay strong year-round. Here are some simple, coach-approved ways your gymnast can keep moving over the holidays—no equipment required! 1. Quick Core Circuits (5 minutes!) Core strength is the foundation of every gymnastics skill, from handstands to giants. Try this easy holiday-friendly circuit: 20-second hollow hold 20-second arch hold 10 tuck-ups 10 V-ups 15-second plank Repeat 2–3 times if your gymnast is feeling motivated! These exercises keep shapes sharp and help gymnasts return to practice feeling ready rather than rusty. 2. Leg Strength Builders You Can Do Anywhere Whether you’re home, traveling, or visiting family, legs can always stay strong: 20 squats 10 jump squats 20 lunges (10 each leg) 10–20 calf raises 10 single-leg balances (eyes closed for a challenge!) We live in a world of instant everything. When many of us were kids, if we wanted to watch a movie, we had to go to the store, rent a VHS, and hope it wasn’t already checked out. There was waiting, anticipation, and sometimes disappointment. But when our kids want to watch something today, they can stream it instantly — no waiting required. This ease and speed are incredible in many ways, but they also come with a challenge: kids are growing up in a world where they don’t often have to wait, struggle, or problem-solve to get what they want. When things come instantly, the ability to tolerate frustration or bounce back after a setback doesn’t always have the chance to develop naturally. That’s where gymnastics comes in. Gymnastics: The Perfect Training Ground for Resilience At GRIT Gymnastics in San Diego, we see every day how this sport uniquely builds resilience in kids. Gymnastics isn’t something that can be mastered overnight. Every skill — from a cartwheel to a kip — takes patience, focus, and repetition.
